Maps Deep Dive

Do not rely only on Google Maps.

Navigating in China is not about "can the map open" — it's about entrances, pickup/drop-off points, Chinese names and local map data. Installing the right app and saving the right Chinese addresses matters more than anything.

Install a local map before you land.

Before arrival, install Amap (高德地图) — the most reliable tool for getting around Chinese cities independently. If you're on an iPhone, Apple Maps works as a simpler English backup. Whichever you use, save your hotel name and key addresses in Chinese and screenshot them for backup.

Amap (main)

The most full-featured, most accurate local map. Supports walking, transit, driving, cycling and ride-hailing — the top choice. The interface is Chinese, but the operation is intuitive.

Apple Maps (iPhone backup)

English interface, simple operation, data from Amap. A good backup for iPhone users who don't want to wrestle with a Chinese interface.

Baidu Maps (alternative)

Similar features to Amap with similar coverage; some users prefer its interface. Can serve as a second backup.

Screenshots + offline maps

Screenshot key routes and your hotel's Chinese address in advance, and download Maps.me offline maps as a backup for when there's no network.

Why Google Maps is unreliable

It opening doesn't mean it works.

Google Maps may load in mainland China, but local place data, positioning and routes can be outdated or misaligned. Use a locally supported map as your main navigation tool.

Offset

Positioning can be misaligned.

Coordinate-system differences and outdated local data can make the blue location dot, business entrances or route guidance appear in the wrong place. The size of the mismatch varies, so confirm important locations in Amap or Apple Maps.

Data

Street-level data is incomplete.

Many newly built roads, internal community roads and pedestrian passages simply don't exist on Google Maps or are still the old version. The result: navigation sends you on a detour, into a dead end, or repeatedly prompts "re-routing."

Metro

Metro exit info is missing.

Large metro stations can have many exits spread across several blocks. Exit information may be incomplete in Google Maps, while local maps usually provide more detailed exit guidance.

Walking

Walking routes are inaccurate.

Walking navigation often ignores pedestrian overpasses, underpasses, gate barriers and community fences, planning routes that are actually impassable. Local apps like Amap handle pedestrian infrastructure far more carefully.

Merchants

Merchant info is outdated.

Restaurant, hotel and attraction operating status and addresses update very slowly on Google Maps and may point to a relocated or closed shop. Local maps have more real-time merchant reviews, hours and contact numbers.

The open principle: use Amap or Apple Maps for actual navigation; Google Maps only as a macro-level backup reference — don't use it for the last mile.

Local Map Apps Compared

Four options — how to choose.

There are several usable local maps on mainland China, but they differ in positioning and target users. Below compares four mainstream options to help you quickly pick a main and a backup.

Amap (高德地图)

Most recommended. Chinese interface but the strongest features and most accurate data, supporting walking, transit, driving, cycling and in-app ride-hailing. Metro exits, bus arrival times and live traffic are all reliable — the top choice for independent travel.

Baidu Maps

Features similar to Amap with comparable coverage; some users prefer its interface and voice navigation. Can serve as a second backup — not recommended to use alongside Amap as a co-main. Pick one and learn it well to save hassle.

Apple Maps

The simplest backup on iPhone. English interface, intuitive operation, underlying data from Amap — far more accurate than Google Maps. Good for travelers who don't want to wrestle with a Chinese interface, though less full-featured than Amap.

Tencent Maps

Mostly used embedded inside WeChat. When a friend sends you a location in WeChat, tapping it opens Tencent Maps navigation. Useful as a supplement; no need to install separately.

Amap (Gaode) User Guide

From install to ride-hailing — all in one.

Amap is your main navigation tool in China. The six steps below cover the full flow from download to actual use. Install it and save your common addresses before you leave.

01 Install

Download and basic setup.

Download and install from a domestic app market or the Amap official website. Open it and grant location permissions; in settings you can switch the voice prompt language and navigation preferences (avoid overpasses when walking, avoid tolls when driving, etc.). The interface is Chinese, but the icons and flow are intuitive — workable with a translation app.

02 Search

Searching places: Chinese names are most accurate.

Searching with the full Chinese name has the highest accuracy, e.g. "故宫博物院" (Palace Museum) or "全聚德前门店" (Quanjude Qianmen branch). English or pinyin searches often fail to match or match the wrong place. Compile the Chinese names of attractions and restaurants you plan to visit before departure, and copy-paste them for the most reliable search.

03 Save

Save common addresses: your hotel's Chinese address.

Save your hotel, airport and major stations' Chinese name and full address to "Favorites" or "My Places," and also save a screenshot. You can pull it up directly when heading back to the hotel, hailing a ride or showing the address to a driver — no need to type on the spot.

04 Transit

Metro and bus navigation.

Select "Transit" mode and Amap gives you metro, bus and walking combinations, labeling transfer stations, estimated time and fare. Crucially, it tells you which exit to use — follow it, because choosing the wrong metro exit can add a ten-minute walk.

05 Walking

Walking navigation.

Use walking mode for the last mile. Amap prompts overpasses, underpasses and pedestrian turns — far more reliable than Google Maps. After starting navigation, watch the direction arrow; it auto-reroutes if you go off course.

06 Ride-hailing

Ride-hailing: request a car directly inside Amap.

Amap aggregates multiple ride-hailing platforms, so you can request a car directly in the app without installing DiDi separately. Enter your destination and choose "Ride-hailing" to compare prices, pick a car type, see the plate number and route during the trip, and pay via Alipay or WeChat.

Offline Backup

When there's no network, how to find your way.

eSIM drops, hotel Wi-Fi is bad, underground signal is lost — these things happen. Preparing an offline plan lets you still find your way when the network drops.

Four things for offline backup

  • Screenshot key routes in advance: save navigation results from your hotel to the airport and to major attractions, including transfers and exit numbers.
  • Download offline maps: install Maps.me or a similar offline map and download the target city's offline pack in advance, so you can still locate and look up routes with no network.
  • Save a screenshot of your hotel's Chinese address: capture the hotel name, Chinese address, phone and nearest metro exit — useful for showing drivers or asking directions.
  • Memorize the metro map: remember the 2–3 metro lines you'll use and the rough transfer stations, so you can find your direction from in-station maps even without network.
The open principle: local maps as the main, screenshots and offline maps as support, Google Maps only as a macro reference. Three layers of backup — no panic even offline.

Pre-Departure Checklist

Before you fly, check these off.

Checklist

  • Amap installed and positioning works.
  • iPhone users have confirmed Apple Maps works as an English backup.
  • Hotel Chinese name, full address and phone saved as favorites and screenshots.
  • Compiled a list of Chinese names for target attractions and restaurants for direct search.
  • Screenshotted key routes from hotel to airport and major attractions (including metro exits).
  • Downloaded the offline map for the target city (such as Maps.me).
  • Memorized common metro lines and transfer stations for offline use.
  • Confirmed phone location permissions are fully enabled for map apps.

Common Mistakes

  • Searching smaller places only in English, with no match or a wrong match.
  • Trusting the map location without checking the actual entrance, and not being able to get in once you reach the door.
  • Not saving the hotel address in Chinese, unable to hail a ride or explain clearly when heading back.
  • Forgetting to screenshot for offline use, leaving you completely lost when the network drops.
  • Heading out with only Google Maps installed, then finding severe positioning offset after landing.
  • Ignoring metro exit numbers, getting off at the nearest station but taking the wrong exit and walking a long detour.
