Visa Deep Dive

Confirm your entry path before you book.

Entry requirements depend on your passport, travel purpose and route. Check the latest official rules before booking non-refundable travel.

Match your passport and route to the right entry pathway.

China uses several visa-free and visa pathways. The correct one depends on nationality, passport type, purpose, entry port, onward route and intended stay.

Option One

Unilateral visa-free entry

Eligible ordinary-passport holders can enter for approved short-term purposes without applying for a visa in advance. Check the current country list and policy dates before travel.

Option Two

Mutual visa-exemption agreement

China has separate agreements with individual countries. Eligible passport types, stay limits and cumulative-stay rules vary by agreement.

Option Three

240-hour visa-free transit

This route requires an eligible nationality, a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region, and travel through designated ports and permitted areas.

Option Four

Tourist or other visa

If no visa-free pathway fits your trip, apply for the appropriate visa before departure through the Chinese embassy, consulate or official visa application service for your place of residence.

01 Passport

Check the rule for your exact passport.

Do not apply one universal passport-validity rule to every traveler. Unilateral visa-free entry, mutual agreements, transit policies and visa applications can have different requirements. Confirm validity, passport type and blank-page requirements through the official source that applies to you.

02 Route

Transit rules depend on the complete itinerary.

Visa-free transit is not the same as a standalone trip to China. Your departure point, onward destination, confirmed ticket, entry port, exit port and permitted travel area must all fit the current policy.

03 Documents

Keep your booking details consistent.

Carry the passport used for booking, confirmed return or onward travel where required, and your first accommodation details. Names and passport numbers should match across airline, hotel and transport bookings.

04 Stay period

Confirm how your permitted stay is calculated.

Stay limits and calculation rules depend on the entry pathway. For current unilateral visa-free entry and 240-hour visa-free transit, the permitted period is calculated from 00:00 on the day after entry. Check the official rule for your specific pathway and leave before it expires.

Overstaying may result in a warning. In serious cases, the penalty can be RMB 500 per day up to RMB 10,000 in total, or detention for 5–15 days.
